Biographical Note
Zessi (Sessi; Sessy; Cessi) Nelkens née Oppenheimer was born 1911 in Langsdorf, Germany, daughter of Gitta and Hermann Oppenheimer. She left Germany in 1939 for England and immigrated to New York in 1940. In 1942 she married the German immigrant Willi Nelkenstock.
Zessi’s parents, Hermann (1881-1944) and Gitta (1884-1944) Oppenheimer as well as her paternal grandmother Helena Oppenheimer (1855-1942) were deported to Theresienstadt in 1942. Helena died in Theresienstadt; Hermann and Gitta perished in Auschwitz.
