Scope and Contents

This collection contains original official documents pertaining to two brothers, Ephraim Salomon Unger (1789-1870) and David Salomon Unger (1801- ), both renowned mathematicians in Germany in the 19th century. Also included are photocopies of documents pertaining to both brothers as well as members of their family.

Folder A contains two education certificates for Ephraim Salomon Unger (1789-1870), as well as 13 official and educational certificates for David Salomon Unger (1801- ). Photocopies of documents pertaining to the brothers, their father and other members of the family may be found in folder B.

Biographical Note

Ephraim Salomon Unger (1789-1870) and his younger brother David were born in Coswig, Saxony, the sons of Salomon David Unger (born 1755 in Krakow) and his wife Jeanette (née Cohn, born 1769 in Treuenbrietzen). The family then settled in Erfurt, where Ephraim Salomon Unger taught mathematics at the university. In 1822, David Salomon Unger studied mathematics at the Berliner Akademie der Wissenschaften. He converted to the Protestant church and worked as an architect in Sachsen-Weimar.

Document A.II.4 is signed by David Friedlaender, who was the first Jewish member of the Berlin city council and a friend of Moses Mendelssohn.

Document A.II.10 is signed by Eduard Gans, founder and first president of the ‘Verein fuer Cultur und Wissenschaft der Juden in Berlin’.
