Biographical Note

Chemist Karl Taussig (1888-1973) was born in Beraun (today Beroun, Czech Republic). He and his wife Irma née Taussig (1889-1942) had three daughters born in Berlin: Else (1916-1972) and fraternal twins Ingeborg (1921-1942) and Hildegard (nicknamed Hilde, 1921-1989). The family settled in Gleiwitz (today Gliwice, Poland) and in 1935 moved to Prague. In 1939, Else left Prague illegally for Palestine via Sulina, Romania on the S.S. Sakarya, which sailed into Haifa bay February 13, 1940. Karl and Hildegard survived Theresienstadt, Auschwitz Birkenau, and other camps. Ingeborg and her family did not survive the Holocaust. In 1948, Hildegard married David Friedman and had one daughter, Miriam. They eventually moved to Saint Louis, Missouri.
