Scope and Content Note

This collection contains family correspondence and employment, immigration and restitution correspondence and documents. Also included are photographs relating to Ruth Taub and her parents, Isaak and Lisette Nathan.

The correspondence from 1939 to 1942 is mostly letters from her parents Isaak Nathan (1880-1941) and Lisette Nathan née Harf (1882-1942) and her aunts Berta and Meta Harf in Aachen. There are also some letters from other family and friends. The post-war correspondence is also with friends and family, and also includes some restitution material, as well as letters concerning the estate of Martha Harf.

The collection also includes an English translation by Taub of a German story by Frida Elbert about Karl Kraus, an ancestor of Taub's; condolence letters regarding her father's death; Taub's diary; letters of reference from various jobs; two photographs, one of the Ruth with her parents in 1939, and one of some children dressed in costume; and some envelopes and ephemera.

Biographical Note

Ruth Taub née Kühne (1921-2004) was adopted by Isaak Nathan (1880-1941) and Lisette Nathan née Harf (1882-1942). She grew up in Emmerich, Germany, and immigrated to New York via England in 1939, where she married Leo Taub. Her parents, as well as her aunts Berta and Meta Harf of Aachen, were killed in the Holocaust.
