Scope and Content Note

The collection contains the following items pertaining to August Belmont, Sr.: three autographed manuscript items reflecting Belmont's financial connections with the Rothschild family (1841); an autograph letter of introduction to the firm of C.N. de Rothschild, Naples, Italy, on behalf of Charles A. Mann, former state Senator of New York (1852); a letter declining an invitation (1879); and an undated letter, addressed to the President of the United States (most probably Abraham Lincoln) with 17 signatures, among which is Belmont's, recommending John Henley Higbee for a military appointment.

Also included is an invitation from August Belmont, Jr., to inspect the Interborough Rapid Transit Co. subway prior to its opening for public service (1904). And an invitation to celebrate commencement of the IRT construction (1900).
