Scope and Content Note

Contains the original and the true copy of the will of Jacob Raphael Cohen (1810-1811) and the inventory of his estate (1812). Of special note in the will are his requests regarding the manner of his burial and the furnishing of oil for the eternal light in the Mikveh Israel Synagogue in Philadelphia.

Also included is a photocopy of the Record book begun by Cohen and continued by several others, among them Benjamin Nones (1757-1826), Dr. Alexander Wertheim (d. 1830), Lewis Allen, Jr. (1793-1841), Zalegman Phillips (1779-1839), and Abraham Hart (1810-1885); records of circumcisions, marriages and deaths, in Hebrew and English, of more than 500 individuals in Pennsylvania, New York, and Quebec where Cohen served as a Hazzan; special prayers for synagogue donors; memorial prayers; a prayer for the 1782 dedication of the first synagogue of Congregation Mikveh Israel; Cohen's translation of a marriage contract; and a Halitzah document.

A detailed, annotated study of the Record book was published in the American Jewish Historical Quarterly, v. 59.

Biographical Note

The executors of Cohen's estate were Samuel Hart and Isaac B. Phillips; an appraiser of the estate was Jacob I. Cohen.
