Scope and Contents

This collection consists of five letters and six articles pertaining to legal matters involving Benjamin N. Cardozo, Robert H. Jackson, and Fiorello La Guardia. Of special interest is a letter to "Mr. Filene" (probably E.A. Filene), regarding a proposed mass meeting to be held in Boston in support of the nomination of Louis D. Brandeis for associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1916?).

The six offprints in Folder 2 are printed articles written by Frankfurter. All are autographed to "Herb" or "Herbertus." The titles are: "Benjamin Nathan Cardozo" (an article written for Dictionary of American Biography, undated); "Some Observations on the Nature of the Judicial Process of Supreme Court Litigation" (read before the American Philosophical Society, April 22, 1954); "In Memorium: Robert H. Jackson" (Harvard Law Review, April 1955); "The Supreme Court in the Mirror of Justices: Being the First Owen J. Roberts Memorial Lecture at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Philadelphia, Wednesday, March 20, 1957"; "Fiorello H. LaGuardia" (address on the occassion of the LaGuardia memorial dedication at LaGuardia Houses, Rutgers Place and Clinton Street, Manhattan, September 20, 1957); and "A Lawyer's Dicta on Doctors: The George W. Gay Lecture, delivered at the Harvard Medical School on Friday, March 21, 1958."
