Historical Sketch
East New York, located in Eastern Brooklyn surrounded by Brownsville, Jamaica Bay, and the Queens borough border, was developed during the 1830s. The area eventually became home to immigrant populations of Jews, Italians and Slavs who sought manufacturing jobs by the 1930s. A wave of Puerto Ricans escaping poor economic conditions in Puerto Rico combined with African-Americans seeking industrial jobs slowly changed the area as original populations left after World War II when manufacturing and industrial jobs began to leave New York City. Today, the area is predominately African-American and Hispanic.
Fred Firschein, who took the images in this collection, was a former resident of East New York.
