Records of the Curaçao Jewish Community Collection
Scope and Content Note
The collection contains Dutch and Portuguese documents pertaining to the Jewish community and dealing especially with Congregation Mikve Israel and Neve Salom, the David Aboab controversy, and the communal reorganizations of 1750-51. Of particular interest is a Misheberach prayer mentioning Aaron Lopez, Jacob Rodriguez Rivera, Daniel Gomez, Congregation Shearith Israel of N.Y., Shaar Hashamayim of Jamaica and Neve Salom of Surinam.
Also contains printed copies of the 1886 Mikve Israel regulations (in Dutch, Portuguese, and Spanish); the 1879 and 1934 regulations of the "Alivio del Pobre," Mikve Israel's welfare fund; a brochure of the Montefiore centenary (1885); a translation of blessings used in the synagogue ritual; and printed publications and photographs relating to Curaçao Jewry.
Four rolls of microfilmed documentary and printed materials are present in the collection, including: lists of births (1723-1854; 1854-1891), deaths (1883-1912), community members and synagogue officials; copies of communal regulations; a pastoral letter of Chief Rabbi Chumaceiro (1864); miscellaneous correspondence relating to synagogue affairs; printed copies of sermons, discourses and occasional prayers (including one for the Moses Montefiore centenary); printed invitations and announcements; miscellaneous newspaper clippings; and copies of numerous publications dealing with communal affairs and Curaçao Jewish history.
A typed inventory of the microfilmed material is included in the collection.
