Scope and Contents

In 2004, Dr. Deborah Dash Moore published G.I. Jews: How World War II Changed a Generation, an in-depth and personal look at the experience of American Jews who fought in WWII. Largely based on the experiences of 15 specific individuals, the book discusses the wartime experience of Jewish Americans, largely drawn from letters, memoirs, and oral histories.

The collection was donated by Dr. Dash Moore in 2018, and consists of source materials and additional items utilized in the researching and writing of the book. Memoirs, letters, oral history transcripts, newspaper clippings, and other materials are included in the collection.

The materials are organized alphabetically, by the last name of the interviewee/subject.

Biographical / Historical

Deborah Dash Moore received her Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1975, and currently is the Frederick G.L. Huetwell Professor of History at the University of Michigan. She has authored many books about American Jewish history, including American Jewish Identity Politics, The Urban Origins of American Judaism, and Gender & Jewish History. She has also engaged in a number of major editorial projects, including the three-volume award winning City of Promises (2012 NYU Press) and serving as editor-in-chief of the ten-volume anthology, The Posen Library of Jewish Culture and Civilization.
