Scope and Content Note

This collection contains accounts, lists, receipts, and reports of the committees appointed by the Jewish Community of New York for the years 1855 and 1858, to provide matzoth for Passover to the needy Jewish families of the city.

The collection consists of a draft of a report (undated, but probably 1855) of the Committee of the United Congregations and Societies for the Free Distribution of Matsoth to the Poor. The Committee consisted of Philip Levi (Levy), Harris Aaronson, Jacques J. Lyons, Zion Bernstein, and Joseph Levy.

The remaining papers of the collection pertain to the committee appointed for the year 1858, and consist of a list of funds collected from various synagogues and individuals for the purchase of matzoth, dated March 11th and 17th; an agreement with matzo baker to deliver a given quantity of "Passover Bread" at a fixed price to Rev. J.J. Lyons and Z. Bernstein for distribution to the poor, dated March 18th; two financial statements, one dated April 8th and one undated; two receipts dated April 13th; a list of 665 individuals and institutions, the size of their families, their addresses, and the amounts of matzoth they each required for Passover; three rough drafts of the Executive Committee's final report; the final report of the Executive Committee of the Association dated New York, April 21st, 1858, and signed J.J. Lyons, Z. Bernstein, Louis Levy, S.M. Isaacs and M. Schwab.
