Mestel, Jacob, 1884-1958

The collection of Jacob Mestel consists of the general, professional and personal correspondence of Jacob Mestel, manuscripts of plays by other authors, manuscripts of poetry, essays and plays by Jacob Mestel, translations of plays into Yiddish, production material, clippings, theater programs, personal documents, and theater photographs.

Clipping. Includes (clockwise from upper right): Jacob Mestel, Herman Yablokoff, Rose Ponsel (opera singer), Jacob Kalich, Louis Weiss, Hymie Jacobson, Miriam Kressyn, and Itzik Feld. The captions contain references to Mestel's currently playing in "Mekhutonim" at the Yiddish Folks Theatre, and to an upcoming evening in honor of Weiss at the Bronx Art Theatre (the latte event took place on 11 June 1935).

Letters addressed to Ben-Ami and Mestel, while on tour with their theater company in South America, concerning their schedule and activities, from the following three organizations: Gezelshaft far Yidisher Kolonizatsye in Urugvay, Montevideo; Fareyn "Kadima," Moisés Ville, Argentina; and Idisher Kultur-Fareyn, Santa Fe, Argentina. Also, a related clipping from a Buenos Aires Yiddish newspaper. 4 items.

Letter from Mestel addressed to an unidentified addressee ("Doktor"), outlining the planned "Elkin program" at which the addressee is to give a lecture. Possibly relates to the celebration of Mendel Elkin's 30th anniversary of his activities in theater and culture, in New York in 1932. 1 item.
