Zunz, Leopold, 1794-1886

The collection contains correspondence among members of the Ehrenberg and Rosenzweig families, including let-ters from Franz Rosenzweig, Adam Rosenzweig, Philipp and Richard Ehrenberg, as well as with other parties, including Rudolph von Jhering, Betty Mauthner, Claire von Gluemer, Jacob Freudenthal and, in copies only, Leopold and Adelheid Zunz and Heinrich Heine. Also included are engagement contracts, marriage banns, school curricula and certificates, character refer-ences, eulogies, family histories, and other documents concerning family members. This material also reflects much of the history of the Samsonschule in Wolfenbuettel of which members of the Ehrenberg family were principals.

This collection contains the extensive research of the historian Hanns Reissner. The most prominent subjects of the collection are the philosopher and jurist Eduard Gans and the Verein für Kultur und Wissenschaft der Juden, although Reissner's research also addresses many other subjects within the field of both German and American Jewish history. Included in the collection are extensive research notes and correspondence concerning his work, his unpublished manuscripts, clippings and offprints.

This collection contains some personal papers and a number of printed sermons and essays by Heymann Jolowicz and others; in many cases these materials appear to have been privately printed or printed only in a very limited run.

The bulk of the collection consists of various materials which describe primarily Heine’s mixed perception in Germany throughout the 20th century. In addition, there are seven original letters in the handwriting of Heinrich Heine and photocopies of several more letters, as well as manuscripts and other materials pertaining to Heinrich Heine and his family. Articles in typescripts deal with various aspects of Heine’s work.

The collection contains correspondence, including several letters from Leopold Zunz and Moses Moser, documents, and family trees related to the teacher Immanuel Wohlwill, the neurologist Friederich Wohlwill, and other Wohlwill family members.

Leopold Zunz (1794-1886) was one of the founders of the Wissenschaft des Judentums. The bulk of this collection consists of his and his wife Adelheid's correspondence. Also included is an extensive collection of visiting cards he received as well as a few images and articles about him.

The collection contains typescripts of articles by Nahum N. Glatzer, mostly with his handwritten additions. Interspersed are newspaper clippings about Glatzer (including an obituary). Also included are printed and typed pages, listing archival holdings in the Glatzer estate.

The first folder contains a two part typescript by Salomon Samuel, a reflection on the period of Jewish emancipation (5600-5700, i.e. circa 1840 to 1938) titled "5600-5700. Rueckblick auf ein Jahrhundert juedischer Weltenaera". In the first part (27 pp.) Samuel describes the historical events from the so called "Damascus affair" (1840) to the Évian Conference (1938), in the second part titled "Religioese und geistesgeschichtliche Entwicklung" (179 pp.) the Jewish religious and intellectual developments in the Era of emancipation.

The second folder contains a photocopied typescript titled "Einfuehrung", the introduction to Samuel's "Ein Lehrbuch juedischer Religion" (published in 1930) and a biographical article by Samuel's son Jochanan Samuel (1901-1976) titled "Rabbiner Dr. Salomon Samuel" published in: Muenster am Hellweg. 6/9 (June, 1978). pp. 81-88.

The Samuel Meyer Ehrenberg Collection contains correspondence in personal matters, a biographical manuscript and various documents concerning the family history.

A collection of printed rare German Judaica assembled by the scholar and collector Yosef Goldman. The collection consists of books, pamphlets, and decrees.

The collection contains photocopies and microfilm reels with items from the Leopold Zunz Archives at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel.
