Buchheim Jonas Family Collection

Abstract

The Buchheim Jonas Family Collection holds documentation of various branches of the Jonas family of Waldbreitbach, Germany, especially the descendants of Louis Jonas and Ella Buchheim, and tells of their emigration from Germany. In addition, it documents aspects of the life of Meier Buchheim of Dauborn, Germany, especially his attempt to emigrate and later death. The collection includes many family photographs, family trees, correspondence, official documents, material on the village of Waldbreitbach, and other documentation.

Fred Strauss Family Collection

Abstract

Fred Strauss was the son of Milian Strauss (1893-1964), a textile businessman in Frankfurt am Main during the 1930s. This collection consists of the personal papers of the Strauss and Neu families. The bulk of the collection is correspondence written from 1938-1941 and restitution papers from the 1960s. Other materials include personal identification papers, vital records, and emigration papers.

This collection holds materials relating to the life of Hedwig Strauss, a Jewish woman who perished during the Shoah. Although it is primarily composed of letters and postcards to her son Walter dealing with her life in Germany between 1939 to 1941 and her attempts to escape, it also includes further correspondence with and between family members as well as personal and official documents on Hedwig Strauss and her son Walter.

Linz Family Collection

Abstract

This collection contains genealogical and family documents of the Linz and the Weiter families from Greussenheim and Tauberrettersheim; as well as documents and photographs regarding the Jewish community in Hof. Genealogical information includes a family tree and family history about the Linz and the Weiter families (from mid-18th to early 20th century), and correspondence with German archives about historical members of that family (1983-1998) including a list of Linz family members listed in the Jewish registers of Greussenheim and Weiter family members of Tauberrettersheim, 1813-1875. Material about the Jewish community at Hof consists of correspondence with the city of Hof and photographs taken in 2005 of the new Jewish community center (primarily composed of Russians) and memorial plaque to the original synagogue burned in 1938 (where current community has a Yom Hashoah service annually). The collection also contains a leather bound book that belonged to Hermann Epstein (maternal grandfather of Charles B. Linz), containing poetry dedicated to his future wife Marie Frank, and a poem written on business stationary. Old photographs include one of Hermann Epstein in a Shakespeare performance. Also included in the collection is a letter, of unknown connection to the rest of the collection, addressed to Emil Heniken in Nürnberg, enforcing the law that non-Jews must only be treated by non-Jewish doctors (1934).

The Sartorius Family Collection holds documentation on the history of the Sartorius family, along with its related families. Most of the collection consists of family trees and correspondence concerning family genealogy, although memoirs and biographical articles are also present, as are a number of family photographs. The collection especially provides information on the family's origins in Germany and lives in the American South, including family members' service in the Confederate forces during the Civil War, in addition to some information on parts of the family who resided in France.
