Biographical / Historical
The hospital was founded in 1848 and opened in 1853. In 1865 another hospital was opened at Dixmont for the insane which was officially the Insane Dept. of the Western Pennsylvania Hospital. The two hospitals were under one general management until July 1907 when they received separate charters. The hospital at Pittsburgh, which officially had been the Medical and Surgical Dept. of the Western Pennsylvania Hospital, retained the name Western Pennsylvania Hospital, while the Insane Dept. took the name Dixmont Hospital for the Hospital for the Insane.
