Scope and Content Note
The collection contains biographical materials and writings by Jack Nusan Porter, including articles, photographs, synagogue pamphlets and newsletters, and sociology articles by Porter. The sociology articles in the collection mostly focus on cults, Jewish women in the anti-Nazi resistance, and conflict resolution. There are also materials commemorating Jewish Currents.

Biographical Note
Jack Nusan Porter was born in Rovno, Ukraine on December 2, 1944. He was born to partisan commander Srulik Puchtik (Irving Porter) of the Kruk-Maks Fighting Group. Approximately 400 Jews were in the fighting group, which also hid and protected a family group of civilians. His mother, Faygeh Merin Puchtik, was a leader in the family group. After World War II, the family immigrated to the United States. Porter received his bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1967 and his doctorate in sociology from Northwestern University in 1971. Porter was involved in multiple student groups, including Students for a Democratic Society and the Jewish Student Movement. Porter was a sociology professor at multiple universities in Massachusetts. His studies focused on modern genocide and the sociology of the Holocaust. In his forties, Porter was ordained and was the rabbi at congregations in Marlboro and Chelsea, Massachusetts and Key West, Florida. Porter unsuccessfully ran for Congress in 2012.
